Ongoing Service Projects

The Annual T.P.R.C. Benefit Powwow is the largest, two-day powwow between El Paso and Ft. Worth, attracting hundreds of vendors, dancer and their families from Texas and surrounding states.  Thus, our Canned food drive is thriving and bringing in an excess of 1 ton of canned goods.  A free powwow, we ask for donations of canned goods in lieu of a monetary fee,  to benefit the West Texas Food Bank.  In 2007, we collected over one and one half ton of canned food for this organization.

This event benefits local businesses; by generating over $1,000,000 in tourism dollars.

We hold a “Pow-wow Preview” a few months before the annual Powwow.  This two-hour event is to publicize the fall event, to educate the public about the dances and regalia and to invite people to join the Powwow Committee.

Education Programs: We provide dancers and speakers to area public schools throughout the year.  In the past, we have taken programs to Odessa College, Rusk, Reagan, & Jordon Elementary, and Bowie, Hood,  & Ector Jr. Highs.  Many of the surrounding Region 18 area schools have also been visited with great American Indian presentations.

Speakers Bureau: We also make speakers available to area civic clubs and organizations, e.g. the Lions, Optimists and Rotary.  We have been part of activities at the Museum of the Southwest in Midland.  We are also happy to work with the Boy and Girl Scouts to teach authentic dancing and Native arts & crafts.  To schedule a speaker or program, contact Luis Tijerina @ 432.889.2693.

Clothing Drive: Through contacts we have established on Indian reservations throughout the Southwest and the Dakotas, we have on ongoing effort to collect good, used, warm, winter clothing for all ages, for men, women and children, and new school supplies or books.  These items are shipped regularly throughout the year.  To donate items, contact Vena Lefevre @ 432.334.8703.

Community Involvement: It is a tribal ethic to “give back” to the community where one’s life is lived.  We have had dancers in the 4th of July parade in Odessa, volunteers working as greeters at the annual Christmas celebration, the “Heritage Holidays-Festival of Lights.”  Also participate in the torch lighting ceremony for the A.D.A.

Every year during the Holidays, Project Freedom, provides hefty food baskets for the needy families of our community.  During the deployment of Service men and women for the War efforts, Project Freedom enabled families of these service personnel to have food and other needed items until government stipends could be enforced.
